"No words can truly convey the horror of this tragedy": a small Canadian town left reeling from a devastating school shooting.
When reports surfaced about an active shooter in close proximity, Stacie Gruntman, the principal of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, swiftly enacted a lockdown—an increasingly familiar protocol for educators in today's world.
Hastily making her way through the compact school nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in northern British Columbia, Gruntman ensured that classroom doors were secured. Meanwhile, teachers turned off lights and gathered their students together in a show of solidarity and protection.
Darian Quist, a twelfth-grade student, recounted to CBC Radio how he and his classmates initially presumed the lockdown was simply a drill. However, an influx of “disturbing” images from various areas of the school soon changed their minds, as panic began to settle in.
"We grabbed tables and barricaded the doors," he recalled. In the gymnasium, older students comforted younger ones amid the chaos, while loud bangs reverberated through the building.
In this small town, where only three police vehicles serve the community, officers responded with remarkable speed—arriving in less than five minutes after the alarm was triggered, even coming under fire, according to police reports.
Their rapid response undoubtedly saved numerous lives, but tragically, six people had already lost theirs: a 39-year-old teacher, three girls aged 12, and two boys aged 12 and 13. One victim was found in a stairwell, while the others were located in a classroom.
Additionally, more than two dozen individuals sustained injuries during the incident.
The alleged shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, was also discovered deceased. Authorities later found her mother, 39, and an 11-year-old sibling, presumed to be a stepbrother, dead at a nearby residence.
On the morning following the tragedy, both schools in Tumbler Ridge were closed, and police tape cordoned off roads. A multitude of officers, flown in from surrounding areas, initiated what would become a challenging and emotionally charged investigation.
