They're launching a massive metering project across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states, and it's all thanks to a hefty $550 million boost from the World Bank's Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP). This initiative is designed to overhaul Nigeria's power distribution, and it's kicking off with a bang.
KEDCO's goal is clear: to close the metering gap and wave goodbye to those frustrating estimated bills. They're aiming to improve how they operate, making things more efficient for everyone.
Here's the exciting part: They plan to install no less than 128,000 prepaid meters, and the best part? It won't cost customers a dime!
Dr. Abubakar Jimeta, KEDCO's Managing Director and CEO, emphasized that this isn't just about installing meters. It's about transforming the entire power sector, focusing on better service, happier customers, and a more financially stable system.
The project will prioritize those who currently don't have meters and will replace any faulty ones, all following a clear and transparent plan. New connections will still go through the existing Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework.
Important Note: The DISREP meters are completely free. KEDCO is warning customers not to pay anyone for these meters or their installation.
