AGFC Approves New Fishing Regulations: A Boost for Trout and Bass Enthusiasts
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has made some exciting changes to fishing regulations, bringing a breath of fresh air to anglers across the state. In a recent meeting, the commission unanimously approved new rules that will impact several popular trout tailwaters and Lake Monticello, offering both trout and bass enthusiasts a chance to enjoy their favorite pastime.
Trout Regulations: A Balancing Act
The new trout regulations will be in effect from February 1st until further notice, covering four tailwater fisheries. Here's a breakdown of the rules:
- White River from Bull Shoals Dam to Norfork Access: Anglers can keep two rainbow trout under 14 inches. All other trout species must be released immediately.
- North Fork River from Norfork Dam to Norfork Access: Similar to the White River, anglers can keep two rainbow trout under 14 inches, with all other species released.
- White River from Norfork Access downstream to Arkansas Highway 58 bridge: A daily limit of two trout of any species is allowed, with only one trout over 14 inches permitted.
- Beaver and Greers Ferry Tailwaters: Anglers can keep two trout of any species per day, but all trout longer than 14 inches must be released.
These regulations were implemented to encourage trout fishing after a temporary emergency order last year, which restricted trout harvest due to significant production losses at the Norfork National Fish Hatchery and the AGFC's Jim Hinkle Spring River State Fish Hatchery. The changes aim to strike a balance between trout conservation and angler satisfaction.
Lake Monticello: A Bass Haven
The AGFC also approved new fishing limits for Lake Monticello, located in southeastern Arkansas. The lake has undergone a transformation with a recent drawdown and dam renovation, followed by restocking with Florida largemouth bass and TITAN MAXX bass from Red Hills Fishery.
- Largemouth Bass: Anglers can now keep up to five largemouth bass per day, with only one fish over 16 inches allowed. This regulation aims to reduce pressure on forage species and promote the growth of larger fish.
- Crappie: Up to 15 crappie can be kept per day, with no more than seven crappie measuring 12 inches or longer. This rule helps manage the growing crappie population.
All other fish species at Lake Monticello follow the statewide daily limits.
